New Commercial Trash Collection Franchise to Begin July 1

The County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors awarded a seven year non-exclusive commercial franchise agreement to qualified waste haulers to provide commercial waste collection services within the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Beginning July 1, 2012, all unincorporated Los Angeles County residents and businesses that utilize dumpster/roll-off trash collection service, such as commercial and multifamily properties, will begin to receive new and improved trash collection services. Every Drop Counts!

Did you know that used motor oil never wears out and can be recycled and reused? Motor oil improperly disposed onto the ground or into storm drains can contaminate and pollute the soil, groundwater, and the ocean. Take your used motor oil to one of 650 certified collection centers in California or an auto parts store in your area to be recycled for free. A listing of certified collection centers is available at the State’s CalRecycle website (en Español). To look up the recommended oil change interval for your vehicle instead of defaulting to the oil standard of 3,000 miles, check your owners manual, or visit CheckYourNumber.org to easily find out for free the recommended time to change the oil on most vehicles made from 2000-2012. Fats, Oils & Grease

The Department of Public Works is proposing amendments to Title 20 - Utilities of the Los Angeles County Code to incorporate and consolidate requirements for the control of fats, oils, and greases (FOG) in the sanitary sewer system. Public information meetings were held on October 16, 2008 and August 25, 2009 at Public Works Headquarters. The Proposed Ordinance (Updated September 14, 2009) amending Title 20 better defines the FOG program as required by the Statewide General Waste Discharge Requirements for Sanitary Sewer Systems. It also revises definitions to conform with the 2007 Uniform Plumbing Code and makes references to the Code of Federal Regulations 40CFR for Environmental Protection. Public Counter

Visit the Environmental Programs Division Public Counter to get forms, apply for permits, request technical reviews for industrial waste or underground storage tank plans or methane gas migration protection systems. The Public Counter is located in the Annex Building of the DPW Headquarters (map), (626) 458-3517, open Monday - Thursday, 7 am - 5 pm.
