RECYCLED RUBBER DEMONSTRATION PROJECT
OBREGON PARK
Obregon Park in East Los Angeles is situated within a dense populated urban neighborhood and is frequented by many local residents. Since much of the area is surrounded by low income population and recreational space is scarce, Obregon Park is a particularly popular retreat for children, families, adults, and seniors. Walkers and joggers had utilized the grass and concrete areas in the park. A rubberized path was constructed made from recycled tires to showcase the practical application of recycled tires. The rubberized path provides a clear delineation for walking or jogging and connects the playgrounds and picnic areas. The path is 4ft wide and approximately 1,500ft in length. It is made with recycled rubber panels made of crumb rubber from waste tires. The panels have a composite color of green, tan and grey, and form a solid path that is firm, but softer than concrete. The compositions of the panel provide more cushions for walking or jogging. Additionally, rubber mulch made from recycled waste tires and benches made from recycled plastic were also placed within the perimeter. This project resulted in recycling 5,373 tires.
